French auction house Tajan announced that it will hold a “Women Artists” auction on March 8, in honor of International Women’s Day. The sale will be a collaboration between the Modern and contemporary art departments, and will primarily feature work from a single private collection — one compiled by a woman specifically interested in buying work from female artists done between the mid-19th century and the present.
The top lots are expected to be Sonia Delaunay-Terk’s brilliant geometric work “Rythme coloré,” 1952 , estimated to hammer down at €400,000-600,000 ($535,000-800,000) and Tamara de Lempicka’s “Portrait de femme,” 1924 expected to fetch €150,000-200,000 ($200,000-267,000).
The artist list released by the auction house reads like a who’s-who of female artists since the turn of the 20th century: Diane Arbus, Louise Bourgeois, Marlene Dumas, Helen Frankenthaler, Nan Goldin, Cady Noland, Georgia O’Keefe, Yoko Ono, Elizabeth Peyton, and Cindy Sherman are just a few of the many artists with work being sold during the auction.
