Lotto 276

Aggiudicato a: $3,498,500 (£2,145,266)
Stima: $1,800,000 – 2,200,000
Pear-Shaped Diamond Ring, 29.53 carats, D color, Internally and Potentially Flawless, type IIa ($118,473 per carat)
Lisa Hubbard, Chairman, North and South America, of Sotheby’s International Jewelry Department, and Gary Schuler, Director of New York Jewelry, commented, “We are very encouraged by the prices achieved on many of the diamonds in today’s sale, including over $118,000 per carat for the pear-shaped 29.53 carat D-color, potentially flawless, type IIa, diamond ring, which brought a total price of $3,498,500 against a presale estimate of $1.8/2.2 million. Ten international bidders, both private collectors and trade, competed aggressively for this top-selling lot. The spectacular diamond was the centerpiece of a New York Estate collection that included signed jewels by Van Cleef & Arpels, David Webb, and Bulgari and far exceeded expectations realizing $4.7 million (presale estimate $2.3/3 million). A Fancy Intense Yellow Diamond Ring of 14.24 carats performed well, bringing $386,500 (est. $250/300,000) as did the beautifully mounted 8.01-carat F-color J.E. Caldwell Marquise-Shaped Diamond Ring, which achieved $344,500 (est. $225,275,000).”
Ms. Hubbard and Mr. Schuler continued, “Sotheby’s sale today offered what buyers are looking for in this market, which is interesting, attractively estimated diamonds and signed and period jewels from private collections. We saw spirited competition for signed jewels including the Tiffany & Co. Fancy Vivid Yellow Diamond Ring, 9.55 carats, which brought $446,500 or $47,000 per carat (est. $250/350,000), and the Van Cleef & Arpels 18 Karat Gold, Diamond and Amethyst ‘Botticelli’ Necklace, which sold for $194,500 (est. $50/70,000). Signed jewels, whether of classic or contemporary style, are not only selling well but are attracting new jewelry buyers to the salesroom every season.”
